Homeless

Director info: Jan Collinson, Director of Special Programs

About the program

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act was created to assure that homeless children and youth continue to attend school, regardless of their living situation. It helps provide transportation, school supplies, assistance registering for school, federal meal assistance and referral to community organizations.

Homeless is defined as  “homeless children and youths” as “individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.” However, because the circumstances of homelessness vary with each family’s or unaccompanied youth’s situation, determining the extent to which the family or youth fits the definition must occur on a case-by-case basis.
