November Employee Recognition Awards!

The MCSD Employee Recognition Award is for those employees who go above and beyond on a continual basis for students, staff, and/or parents. Nominations can come from community members, parents, and staff members. The district would like to take this opportunity to introduce to you and congratulate November’s best of the best at MCSD!

larson-walgren-shawn_cms Shawn Larson-Walgren – 6th Grade Teacher at Central Middle School
Nominated by Emma McCreary
“Shawn is completely dedicated to teaching–She gets to school before anyone else and leaves later than most. She pours her soul into bettering herself as a teacher and mentor. It is clear that her heart is devoted to teaching.” Emma McCreary

hoffman-jan-_col Jan Hoffman – Paraeducator at McKinley Elementary
Nominated by Lori Shield
“I am nominating Jan Hoffman because she is THE most amazing Para in the world! Jan goes above and beyond every single day here at McKinley and outside of school as well. Jan comes in early and stays late to help students. Tutoring those that need extra help, going out of her way to help staff and making sure that our building runs amazingly. Jan goes out of her way every Sunday to transport some of her students to and from church. I think that this is a tremendous show of character. I am proud to not only call her my co-worker, but I am proud to call her my friend as well.” Lori Shield

walker-shannon-_mhs Shannon Walker – Science Teacher at Muscatine High School
Nominated by Mark Begey
“Shannon is an outstanding educator and colleague. She always goes above and beyond for students and other staff members. Shannon is always friendly and cordial to everyone around her, regardless of how she happens to be feeling that particular day or week. Shannon ultimately wants what is best for the Muscatine School District, and that is preparing students from all different types of background for success in during their time in our schools and also as they move into adult life.
Shannon is sure to check in with students regarding their academic and social needs. Often times, students from many different backgrounds and grade-levels may be found in her classroom before, during, and after school. Shannon is always willing to help them with their school work, regardless of class. She is encouraging, positive, and ever so helpful. Students have also been in her room to get social and emotional support, which Shannon does a very good job with.
As a first year staff member at M.H.S., she has been a valuable resource. Not only does she know where to find resources or how to get answers, but she is always welcoming; her door is always open to others. Shannon always sets aside what her needs in order to help others with theirs.
Simply put, Shannon is one of most valuable assets we have at M.H.S. and in the M.C.S.D. Shannon is a rock star educator. Shannon is an inspiration to others. Shannon is one of the many reasons that students want to come to school each day. Shannon is a big part of the reason that I look forward to coming to school each day.” Mark Begey
graettinger-robin-_mul Robin Graettinger – School Nurse at WMS/Mulberry
Nominated by Dee Soenksen and Jane Price
“I have worked with Robin Graettinger closely for the last four years. She has helped me out in many situations as a Secretary at WMS. She is always willing to go the extra mile for students/paras/teachers. She would use her own money to bring food to a student so they had food for the weekend. For the past two years she has taken a student home from practices and gets them when they come back on the bus to help a single mother who is trying to make the best possible life for her children in a new country. She goes to appointments with the mother and student to make sure they understand everything that is told to them by the doctor. These are only a few of the things she does on a daily basis helping all of the schools with their special education needs. I truly believe she is most deserving of this honor.” Dee Soenksen

“Robin has gone above and beyond for students but one in particular here at WMS. This week she has been to two doctor appointments with this student. Not only has she attended the appointments on her own time but she has driven both mom and student to these appointments. These appointments took up over 7 hours of her personal time just this week alone! Robin goes to his football games and drives him home from practice and games. Our district is so lucky to have such a dedicated, sweet & caring person!” Jane Price
eichelberger-kathi_gar Kathi Eichelberger – Preschool/ECSE Teacher at Franklin Elementary
Nominated by Kelly Harder and Catherine Clemens
“Kathi is a wonderful teacher and colleague. The opportunities she gives to her students help them grow socially, emotionally and academically. When a child comes to us in kindergarten it is obvious to see who has had her as a teacher!” Kelly Harder
Kathi is constantly going above and beyond for her preschool students and their families at Franklin. She is passionate, caring, and has a love for teaching content as well as social skills to children who don’t always learn them at home. Not only is she a great teacher for Franklin students, but also a mentor for teachers. She builds deep relationships with each and every student in her class, and makes decisions based on the needs of the students. She also serves as an excellent model for the early childhood team at Franklin. Kathi is a great asset to Franklin, for everyone involved including the children, parents, and teachers. I could not think of anyone more deserving of this recognition! Catherine Clemens
