Go Muskies!

  • Today is the last day to turn in Homecoming Dance Permission slips for guests. The form can be picked up in the Asst. Principal’s Office — see Mrs. Chatfield.
  • Today is the last day to sign-up for the Senior March to the Riverfront! Applications are available to any eligible seniors, and can be picked up in Mrs. Orr’s office located in Student Services. Applications are due Wednesday, October 7th.  Cost is $5.
  • Tickets for the Homecoming dance on sale today through Friday, October 9th.  They can be purchased before school, during lunch and after school in front of Students Services.  Please see the list of Homecoming Spirit Days listed at the end of announcements. Go Muskies!
  • Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences – All conference are walk-ins:
    Oct. 19 – 4:00 – 7:15PM
    Oct. 21 – 4:00 – 7:15PM
    Oct. 22 – 1:45 – 3:45 (2-Hour Early Out)
  • ACT Aspire Testing will take place on October 27th for 9th Grade students and October 28th for 10th grade students.  Testing will be all day and will take place at MUSCO Lighting. There will be some students who will remain at MHS to test on both days.  Students will be notified by their counselor in the next 2 weeks if they are to remain at MHS for testing.

  • The Booster club will be selling tickets for the new Homecoming Car Smash donated by Kreiger’s.  The cost is $5 for 3 swings of a sledgehammer at the car decorated in Ottumwa colors and create as much damage as we can. The event will last from 4:30-8:30PM Thursday, and immediately following the assembly Friday until the Homecoming football game. Bring $5 and swing away!
  • The sign-up deadline for Intramural Basketball ends Friday, Oct. 9th.  Arrange a team and sign-up today! Forms are available on the Activities & Athletics Board.
  • The 5th Annual Muskie Marching Invitational will be held this Sat., Oct. 10, from 6-10 pm.  The Mighty Muskie Marching Band starts off the event with the National Anthem followed by their fall show “Illusions” by Jair Klarfeld.  Thirteen area high school marching bands will then vie for awards.  The public is invited to attend. Cost is $5 adults, $3 senior citizens and students K-12; under 5 free.
  • On Saturday, November 7, Iowa State University (ISU) Office of Admissions and Lambda Theta Phi Fraternity are hosting a Family Visit Day for Latino high school youth and their families. Through the visit day, they hope to acquaint youth and their parents to ISU, and to help answer questions about college (e.g., campus life, application process, financial aid and scholarships, college admissions tests e.g., ACT, SAT).  The information shared during the visit day may be most beneficial to youth who are in 11th and 12th grades and their families. All family members are welcome to participate in the visit day.  Families will have opportunities to tour a residence hall, eat in a campus dining hall, meet ISU admissions staff, and ISU students. Register for Latino Family Visit Day @ https://www.admissions.iastate.edu/visit/special_visits.php?type=O

  • New Silver Cord opportunity — see Silver Cord section below.
  • The introductory meeting for the Chemistry Olympiad is Wednesday, Oct. 7th  during the second part of enrichment in the auditorium. NO FOOD OR DRINK, please. If you are interested in honors credit for chemistry and would like to participate, please attend. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Kramer.
  • Are you interested in making a friend from France?  You don’t have to speak French … just agree to host a student for three weeks in February.  If this sounds like something you want to do, contact Mrs. Paulsen in room 201 or email her at deb.paulsen@mcsdonline.org for more information.
  • Gay Straight Alliance will meet this Wednesday, October 7, in room 229 at 3:45 pm.
  • Model UN: Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 14th at 7:45am in Ms. Hansen’s room (11-024). We will review the itinerary for the Des Moines conference on October 20-21.
  • Girls Basketball: No open gym this Thursday. We will resume on Monday, Oct 12 at 5:30pm.
  • FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes): The next huddle meeting is Monday, October 12th at 7:00am in the Commons. Remember to mark the Fields of Faith event on your calendar for Wednesday, October 14th at North End Park in Wapello. It goes from 6:30pm – 9:00pm. Follow @Muskies_FCA on Twitter for updates.

Oct. 8th – Sports Thursday (Favorite sport or team)
Oct. 9th – Muskie Spirit Day (Purple and Gold)

October 8th – Homecoming Parade/Grill-out/Coronation. The Grill-out will be from 5:00 – 7:00PM, with Parade starting at 6:00PM at Grant Elementary and ending at the High School. Coronation starts at 7:00PM in the high school gym.

October 9th – Pep Rally at 2:40PM in high school gym.

October 9th – Homecoming Game: Muscatine Muskies vs Ottumwa Bulldogs.  JV begins at 5:00PM
(Announcement of Homecoming court/parents and King and Queen during halftime)

October 10th – Homecoming Dance  9pm – 12AM

  • NEW Disc Golf Club:  A meeting/practice will take place October 6th at 4:00 for the MHS Disc Golf Club. Please meet at the tennis courts shelter.   Practice ends at 5:15.  Golf Discs will be provided if you don’t have your own. Any questions contact Scott Harmon: scott.harmon@mcsdonline.org

** Silver Cord Opportunities **

  • MCCB Halloween Hike – It is almost that time again! It is time for our annual Halloween Hike.  This year the topic is all about plants and animals of the floodplain!  For the first time in more than a decade, the hike will return to Saulsbury Bridge Recreation Area!  We are looking for volunteers for this big event on Friday night October 16th and Saturday night October 17th.  The hikes start at 6:30 and leave from the lodge every 10 minutes until 8:00.  If you love the spotlight we can give you a part as one of the crazy characters, or we have jobs for trail guides, trail maintenance, collecting tickets, pumpkin carving (Wednesday Oct. 14th 8am-4pm at Discovery Park), and other behind-the-scenes duties.  We’d love to have you help on one or both nights!  Please email Michelle Berns at www.muscatinecountyconservation.com or by phone at 563-264-5922 if interested.
  • Scarecrow Festival—A FREE fun family event put on by the Muscatine Journal and participating area businesses. We need volunteers on October 10 from 9Am – 1 PM to help run the kids games: pumpkin bowling, bean bag toss, ladderball, pumpkin ring toss, newspaper drop, potato sack race, fast draw squirting game, ping pong fish bowl and a few others.   • Washington School is in need of volunteers to help with their Family Gathering. Volunteers will be helping students read and then choose a book they can take home.

  • The Juntos program is looking for 4-5 students who would be interested in providing child care to the siblings of students participating in the program.  Juntos runs for five Sunday evenings from 4-6:30 starting October 4th.  Please see Mrs. Hawkins (Guidance Office in Student Services) if you are interested in volunteering.

Muscatine Chapter of the Iowa Engineering Society: Must plan to pursue a career in engineering. Must attend either University of Iowa or Iowa State University in the Fall of 2016. Must have a 3.0 GPA for 10th and 11th grades. Must have an ACT composite score of at least 24.   Two scholarships available; each worth $1000. The application is available in MHS Student Services. Application deadline: January 15, 2016

Horatio Alger Scholarship: Must demonstrate financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income is required). Must be involved in co-curricular activities and community service activities. Must display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity. Must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Must be a US Citizen.  Scholarships range from $7,000-$22,000.  The application is available at www.scholars.horatioalger.org   Application deadline: October 25, 2015.

Hagan Scholarship:  Must have 3.5 GPA or Higher.  Must have 23 on the ACT or higher. Other eligibility requirements are on the website.
The scholarship award ranges from $1,000-$40,000. The average disbursement is $24,000.  This scholarship is only available in 10 states, including Iowa.  The application and more information is available at www.hsfmo.org   Application deadline: November 15, 2015.

Jerry Woods/Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) Scholarship: Must be enrolling in the first year at an Iowa community college or tech school building trades program including concrete technology and practice. Must be a resident of Iowa.  Scholarship is $2,500 per year for 2 years.
The application is available at www.iowareadymix.org or in MHS Student Services.
Application deadline: November 30, 2015.

Young Entrepreneur Foundation Awards: Must have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and initiative. Must be a graduating senior that owns/operates his/her own small business. Must plan to attend a 2 year, 4 year or vocational school.  Scholarships/awards range from $2000-$15,000
The application is available at www.NFIB.com/YEA   Application deadline: December 18, 2016.

Iowa Newspaper Foundation: Must be preparing for a newspaper career.   A total of 9 scholarships, all available with ONE application.  Total awards will be approximately $6,700. The application is available at www.INAnews.com   Application deadline: February 12, 2016.

Pearl Hull Falk Scholarship: Must be of Protestant Faith, resident of Iowa, and will attend the University of Iowa full time in the Fall of 2016.  The scholarship award is $800.  The application is only available in MHS Student Services.  Application deadline: May 2, 2016.

Midwest Technical Institute Scholarship Program: Must plan to attend MTI in Fall of 2016.
The application is available in MHS Student Services or with an admissions representative at MTI www.midwesttech.edu   Application deadline: July 1, 2016.
