Excellence in Education

Director info: Jan Collinson, Director of Special Programs

What is it?

Excellence in Education provides scholarships for graduating seniors and current eighth graders. It also honors outstanding staff who have made an impact on the lives of our students. The Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust has funded the Excellence in Education scholarship program for over twenty-five years.

Scholarships

Twenty seniors receive a $3,000 scholarship to be applied at the post-secondary institution of their choice. Seniors can be nominated by anyone within the community, including school employees, peers, family members and employers. A wide variety of criteria are taken into consideration, but overcoming adversity is the most important. Many of our students face great adversities, but Excellence in Education scholarships are awarded to those who have continued to achieve their goals in spite of hardships.

Ten eighth grade students are selected, using the same criteria, to receive $1000 scholarships upon graduation from high school. This is not only motivating to students, but unique to any scholarship program.

Each student selects a Muscatine School District employee, past or present, who has made an impact on their education. That person is recognized at the program with the student.

Four certified employees (teachers, administrators, nurses, counselors, etc.) receive $1000 award. One support staff (para-professional, bus driver, food service, etc.) will receive a $500 award. All recipients will be selected from community-based nominations. The major criteria are their positive impact on the education of students in Muscatine schools. Awards can be applied toward coursework or supplies to improve their classroom or building.
