Middle School Naming Committee Submits Recommendation

Beginning in the school year of 2020-2021, the Muscatine Community School district will combine West and Central Middle Schools into one building, using the current West Middle School. To combine both schools and begin a new foundation, it was decided a new name reflecting this change was important. A committee of district employees, school board, and community members was formed to research and provide naming recommendations to the Superintendent.

The committee sought naming input from the community including district employees and students. The community input provided several strong naming options and the committee asked the staff for feedback on those options. The middle school staff overwhelmingly was in favor of “Muscatine Junior High.”
The committee has recommended “Muscatine Junior High School” to the Superintendent of Schools who will present this recommendation to the Muscatine Community School Board at the August 12, 2019 meeting for approval.

The committee would like to thank those that submitted names. There were several recommendations to name the building after people who had an impact in Muscatine, therefore, the committee is recommending the district develop a plan to recognize individuals and/or families from Muscatine who have had a great impact to the community. The committee wants to encourage sharing the stories of these individuals as Muscatine has a deep history to celebrate!
