Go Muskies!

  • Muskie Booster Members needed.  The Muskie Boosters are currently recruiting new board members for the 2016-2017 Board.  Board members help with special events like Fall kick-off, Cake Auction, etc. also helping with concession volunteers.  The Muskie Boosters support all MHS sports, activities, clubs, etc raising funds and helping keep the activities/sports going.   • S.O.A.P. will have a night at the movies at 2797 180th Street on Thursday at 7:30.  
  • 4th Annual MCSD Race for Schools  in on May 7, 2016.  Registration forms are available at the attendance office.
  • Key Club will be hosting a blood drive this Friday, April 1st in the gym from 8:30-1:30. Please check your appointment cards for your scheduled time. If you did not receive an appointment card, but would still like to donate contact a Key Club member or Mrs. Keltner (jen.keltner@mcsdonline.org). All student donors must have an appointment!
  • The annual MHS Art Extravaganza, hosted by the Art Club, is almost here! It is Friday, April 8th in the new wing gallery space from 8 AM until 7:30 PM.
  • We are currently accepting art submissions! You do not have to be in an art class or art club to submit art!We are accepting art through Friday, April 1st. On April 8th, come support your friends and fellow classmates!Food, crafts, and art are all on sale!

  • Muskie Pom Tryouts-Saturday, April 16 High School Gym 10:00 am-1:00pm. APRIL 4th : Tryout Video will be posted on the MUSKIE POM Facebook. On the same day, handbooks will be available at the main offices (High School, West or Central), please pick one up and have it signed by your parents before tryouts.   • Kelly Robison’s class is seeking magazines to use for class projects.  If you have old magazines just taking up space, please consider donating them.  You can place them in Kelly’s staff mailbox.Thank you!
  • The Muskie Baseball program will be participating in the United Way Day of Caring on April 22 from 8am to noon. All baseball players please signup with Coach Josupait in room AA14.

  • Girls Soccer: Soccer girls who plan to help with United Day of Caring must notify Joni Kerr at 264-3104 to arrange plans.
  • CAPE – Large plastic bottles needed (Hawaiin Punch, Cranberry Juice, not gallon milk containers). If you have any to donate, please drop them off at MHS – Attn: Ginger Chatfield.
  • Junior and Senior Girls:  If you are in need of a Prom Dress, stop in the Assistant Principal’s Office and see Mrs. Chatfield.
  • Prom Guest Letters are available in the Asst. Principal’s office.  This permission slip is for guests that do not attend MHS, are in good standing and are under the age of 21. (Prom is on April 30th.)
  • CAPE Adult Volunteers needed to work on May 1, 2016.  CAPE is the post-prom event that takes place at MHS and is FREE to all Juniors and Seniors to attend. There are various jobs and shifts to volunteer for such as large games, casino games, food, etc.  If available or would like more information, please contact Ginger Chatfield at ginger.chatfield@mcsdonline or Becky Wichers at becky.wichers@mcsdonline.org
  • Girl’s soccer is looking for someone to video home and away games –will train if needed.  Please contact Abby Estabrook at estabrookar@mcsdonline.org if interested.
  • Trinity Muscatine-Community Health Fair Poster Contest.   Posters are due no later than March 30th. Please pick up information at the Attendance Office.
  • STARTALK grant from the National Security Agency. The grant supports high school kids to study Chinese this summer at the University of Iowa from July 5-29 to earn college credits. The grant will cover expenses of tuition, textbooks, lunches, and cultural activities.   • ACT practice testing at Musser Library: Anyone with a library card can use Learning Express anywhere they can receive the Internet.  If a student does not have a card, they just need to bring their student ID and proof or address such as a piece of mail addressed to them, a parent with an ID or even a car registration or a pay slip.  If they have an issue with getting a card (maybe overdues or lost books) just have them call and ask to talk to Pam Collins (Library Director).  The link to Learning Express can be accessed via our website’s electronic resource page, musserpubliclibrary.org/research/research-databases.  There are a large number of review and test prep options for both students and faculty through the site including the following:  ACT, PSAT/SAT and a large number of AP practice tests.  Tests for occupational exams such civil service, CDL, EMT, postal workers, and more ASVAB practice tests.  Practice tests and reviews for college placement exams including ASSET/COMPASS and CLEP.  Graduate Schools test preparation including GRE, LSAT, MAT, MCAT,  and more!
  • Attention Seniors – MALES ONLY:  If haven’t already signed up for Selective Service in your government class, you can register online at www.sss.gov.  If you go to this site, click on Register Online.  It is a legal obligation for all male students 18 years or older (can submit information at age 17 years and 3 months) to register with the Selective Service.  By not doing so, men risk their eligibility for future college loans and grants amongst other things.

  • The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), in collaboration with the US military services, offers a series of week long, STEM Engineering Training Camps designed for High School students who excel in math, science, and technology courses.   Each of our camps has a unique curriculum, with the common threads being: challenging environment, extensive hands-on engineering activities, young engineer mentors assigned to every team, and long-term resources provided for alumni.
    The Rock Island Post will be sponsoring an individual for each camp this year and is currently taking applications.  If you are active in STEM or have expressed an interest in pursuing engineering, architecture, or equally related fields in college, please consider this opportunity.

    Full application package NLT must be turned in March 31, 2016 for consideration.  Earlier submissions are highly encouraged, as missing information can still be added up until the April 1st deadline.  Applicants with incomplete packages after the deadline will be dropped from consideration.  
    Candidates will be rated based on GPA, Engineering Applicability of Courses, Extra-Curricular Activities, and the overall layout and content of their application essay.     
  • Tippie Gateway Program, a five-day residential program for students interested in studying business at Iowa – in the hopes that you will share this information with your Muscatine High School students.  The Tippie Gateway Program is intended for current high school juniors. The program is in the summer between the students’ junior and senior year. Preference will be given to applicants from populations under-represented in business including minority, low-income, and/or first-generation.  We will select 40 students to participate in this scholarship-funded program. The only cost for participants is their travel to and from campus.

      * Five-day, residential program: Monday, June 27 through Friday, July 1, 2016
      * No cost to the students; housing, meals, and other expense are covered by scholarships
      * Learn about the various business majors: Finance, Marketing, Economics etc

Gem of Hope Scholarship – The applicant must be a graduating senior from the Muscatine School District and have been personally affected by cancer, by either of the following criteria: The student has been previously diagnosed with cancer or has had an immediate family member who has had cancer (sibling, mother or father), and demonstrates financial need.  Application deadline is April 1, 2016 by 4 PM. Toyota of Muscatine Scholarship – Toyota of Muscatine has established a scholarship program through the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine for graduating Muscatine County students. The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually and is renewable for a second year.  To be eligible, a student: Must be a graduating senior, Muscatine County resident, 2.5 cumulative GPA or better, demonstrate unmet financial need, intend to enroll in an automotive program or business field such as business, finance or marketing at an accredited Iowa educational institution. Muscatine County Soil and Water Conservation Districts’ Kirchner Scholarship information – The Muscatine County Soil and Water Conservation District has established this scholarship program through the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine for graduating Muscatine County students. One $1,000 scholarship is available this year.  to be eligible, at student: Must be a graduating senior, be a Muscatine County resident, 2.5 cumulative GPA or gerr, intend to pursue a career in conservation or agriculture, preference will be given first, to those students enrolling at accredited educational institutions in conservation or agricultural programs, and secondly, those students demonstrating unmet financial need.  Applications are available in Student Services.  For more information, visit your high school counselor’s office, call the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine at 563-264-3863 or email smaharry@GivingGreater.org

Alive and Running Scholarship – Alive and Running is a volunteer driven 5K Run/Walk event held in Dunkerton, Iowa to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention. The Alive and Running Fund will award a $1,500 scholarship to a 2016 High School graduating senior or Current College Student to fund educational costs at a college, university, vocational, or trade school. The award is to recognize and support an individual who has made a positive contribution to the state of Iowa. S.O.A.R Scholarship – Sedona Group partnered with WQAD News 8 to recognize 5 outstanding high school seniors with a $1000 scholarship.  Deadline is April 24, 2016.  S.O.A.R. Scholarship

The Cummins Central Power Scholarship was established by an endowment from Cummins Central Power and is specifically earmarked for individuals pursuing a degree in diesel technology.

The Darryl Mason Memorial Scholarship was established as a way for Darryl to give back to the industry he loved. Darryl was a professional truck driver and a long-time participant in the Iowa Truck Driving Championships. Over the years, Darryl received numerous awards for his professionalism and commitment to safety and also earned a coveted spot on Iowa’s Road Team. Darryl passed away in August 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer, and the IMCF is proud to keep his legacy alive through a scholarship named after this great individual.

The Harold Dickey Memorial Scholarship was established by an endowment from the Dickey family in honor of the late Harold Dickey, founder of Dickey Transport, Inc. and former chairman of the IMTA. This scholarship is awarded to a student from southeast Iowa. (The Harold Dickey Memorial Scholarship has a separate application – Visit www.iowamotortruck.com to access)

The Iowa Council of Safety Management Scholarship was established by the Iowa Council of Safety Management, a group of individuals committed to safety and professionalism in the trucking industry.  The L.W. “Vern” Simpson Memorial Scholarship was established to honor Vern Simpson, the “father” and treasurer of the Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation as well as founder and president of Mid Seven Transportation. Vern Simpson was a valued leader and friend to the trucking industry and to the association.

The Midwest Wheel Companies Scholarship was first formed in celebration of the company’s 100th anniversary in 2011 and its strong commitment and desire to make an investment in the future of Iowa. Through this scholarship, Midwest Wheel Companies (MWC) hopes to attract individuals into the field of business and ultimately the trucking industry. As one of the largest truck parts distributors in the Midwest, MWC is proud and honored to offer a scholarship opportunity to an individual who is pursuing a higher education. MWC has seven branches and serves a customer base in Iowa and its six neighboring states.

The Motor-Ways, Inc. Scholarship was established by an endowment from Pat Storey and MotorWays, Inc. Because of the company’s commitment to always giving back to the association and the trucking industry, a scholarship was the natural course of action to further show their support. Motor-Ways provides a variety of insurance products to carriers of all sizes.

The Paul Crouse Memorial Scholarship was established by an endowment from the Crouse family in honor of their father, the late Paul Crouse, founder of Crouse Cartage Company and former chairman of the board for IMTA. This scholarship is awarded to a student from western Iowa.

The Towing & Recovery Professionals of Iowa Scholarship was established by an endowment in 2012 from the Towing and Recovery Professionals of Iowa (TRPI). This is a division of the Iowa Motor Truck Association which represents Iowa’s towing industry. This scholarship is awarded to a student who is either an employee or a family member of an employee working for a TRPI member in good standing.

The Ziegler/Caterpillar Diesel Scholarship was established by an endowment from Ziegler, Inc. and Caterpillar, Inc. Another great supporter of the association, Ziegler/Caterpillar established the scholarship in an effort to continually invest in the field of maintenance and diesel technologies. This scholarship is earmarked for individuals pursuing a degree in diesel technology.

The 2016 Iowa Golf Association Foundation Ann Griffel and Herman Sani Scholarship applications are now available!
Scholarships are awarded based on academic performance, extracurricular activities and leadership qualities. Completed applications (Griffel & Sani) must be received by Friday, March 18, 2016.

Iowa Section Professional Golfers’ Association, the Iowa PGA Foundation offers an annual scholarship opportunity in memory on one of its members – Charlie Burkart. This scholarship is open to any graduating senior within our section boundaries and any graduating student of an Iowa high school. It is awarded every year to one recipient. The winner will receive $1000 each year of full-time attendance for four years at a college or university of their choice.  PGA Golf Scholarship

Donald Kiser Memorial Scholarship – one-year, non-renewable merit-based award in amount of $1000. Applicant must be pursing studies in chemistry, biochemicstry, or chemical engineering. See link for more information: Application is available in MHS Student Services.  Deadline: March 31, 2016

American Legion/Edward H. Bitzer Scholarships: Applicants must be a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of member in good standing (or deceased member) of one of three posts listed on the application. Must be a senior in high school. Must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Must be a US Citizen.  Application is available in MHS Student Services.  Deadline: April 15, 2016

Director Application – The Director’s Scholarship is for $500.  Applicants can be from a little wider circle known as the Louisa Resources Area (this includes all of Louisa County and surrounding towns/cities) and the applicant can attend any college or university (not restricted to a school in Iowa).More detailed information is included on the application itself.  Participants can choose to apply for both if they qualify, and can receive these grants more than once.  To apply for both, two separate applications need to be submitted. Aspiring Nurse Scholarship:  Nursing Schools Almanac has just launched its second annual Aspiring Nurse Scholarship. Our website will award a $1,000 scholarship to an aspiring nurse who best demonstrates:  A track record of academic excellence, particularly in science and mathematics & A passion for the nursing profession and the overall field of health care. This scholarship is open to all high school seniors who plan to pursue a college education in nursing, including LPN / LVN, ADN, and BSN programs. SFM Foundation: The SFM Foundation provides scholarships to students whose parents were killed or seriously injured in workplace accidents while working for Minnesota, Iowa, or Wisconsin employers.  These scholarships are up to $10,000 per year, for up to five years. Grand Lodge of Iowa, A.F. & A.M.: The Masonic Charitable Educational Corporation is offering the MCED Technical Scholarships (the Mark Earl and Esther Ruth Spencer Technical Scholarships). Students who plan to enroll in a mechanical or trade course of study at an accredited Iowa Community College may apply.  Applications are available in MHS Student Services.  Due Date: March 1, 2016

Catherine McAuley Scholarship/Mount Mercy University: This scholarship provides free tuition to Iowa students whose family income is $45,000 or less annually. This scholarship is renewable for up to 4 years. The student must be a graduating Iowa senior and enroll at Mount Mercy as a new freshman.  Students must reside on campus for all 4 years and participate in Mount Mercy’s College Success Program during their first year on campus.  Students must complete the FAFSA. To maintain the scholarship, students must successfully complete 24 semester hours per academic year and maintain a 2.0 GPA. *Students are automatically considered for the Catherine McAuley Scholarship upon admittance to Mount Mercy University.

Pearl Hull Falk Scholarship: Must be of Protestant Faith, resident of Iowa, and will attend the University of Iowa full-time in the Fall of 2016.  The scholarship award is $800.  The application is only available in MHS Student Services.  Application deadline: May 2, 2016.

Midwest Technical Institute Scholarship Program: Must plan to attend MTI in Fall of 2016.
The application is available in MHS Student Services or with an admissions representative at MTI www.midwesttech.edu   Application deadline: July 1, 2016.
