Go Muskies!
- Congratulations to the girls’ cross country team for Thursday’s performance at the MAC meet. The Fresh-soph girls were team champions led by individual champion Aspen Whyle. The Varsity was second only 10 points behind PV led by Brina Kraft’s second place finish, and all-conference performances by Larkin Chapman and Danielle Roos. The JV team was also second behind individual champion Cassidy Conway.Emma Sweere and Moriah Roeth were top 10 in the JV race. Sarah Solt, Melissa Burzlaff, and Micaela Brunson were top 10 finishers in the Fresh-soph race.
- The Muskie Football Team is conducting a canned food drive for this tonight’s home game.Please consider attending the game, and bringing a canned food item to support the cause. All food collected will be donated to the Muscatine Community Food Pantry.
- Baseball & Softball parents are in charge of working at football concessions on
Friday, October 17th. There are two shifts to work; 4:30 is start of 1st shift and 6:30 is start of 2nd shift. Lots of volunteers are needed to run the concessions. Parents are reminded that the Booster Club provides money to the sports to help with equipment, tournaments, etc. Parents are asked to volunteer to work in exchange for the funds provided to their students sport. - Silver Cord Opportunity. The Healthy Living Festival is looking for volunteers on
Saturday, October 18. If interested please call Brenda Christian at 563-299-6425 – we are looking at 2 hour blocks of time – 10am-12pm, 12:00-2pm or 2-4pm. Things we need done range from traffic control on the riverfront, helping kids make healthy snacks at Weed Park and Discovery Center, helping with fishing demo at Discovery Park, helping with canoe/kayaking at Discovery Park, the Y needs help with kids games at Weed Park, and help at several miscellaneous tents doing whatever they need help with.
- Students interested in MHS Winter Sports. Please remember that you are required to have your parent permission/concussion form and sports physical form on file in the A.D. Office. Before practice begins, check with Mrs. Hansen in Room 162 to make sure your paperwork is complete. Thank you!
- Attention All Senior Males! It’s time to start thinking about or signing up for Mr. Muscatine!
Mr. Muscatine is an all male beauty pageant that raises money for the food drive that is put on my student council. Mr. Muscatine will be held on November 26th, and packets will be in Mrs. Bobays’ office, room 205A starting tomorrow, October 17th. - Adopt A Highway Litter Removal date has been changed this week due to inclement weather and Aspire Testing. We will be having our activity on Saturday, October 18, 2014.

- Students interested in helping Musca Bus clean bus interiors on Saturday, October 25th or Saturday, November 1st should call 263-8152 to sign up. Students will then show up on either or both Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. until noon. A light breakfast will be served. Work will be done at Public Works, 1459 Washington Street. A Musca Bus driver will lead the team.
- Attn. Juniors and Seniors – Washington University in St. Louis will have Admission Counselors available at the West Des Moines Marriott on Sunday, October 26, 2014. If you have questions, contact Wash U at 800-638-0700.
- The Muskie Band’s annual nut fundraiser is underway! Order cashews, mixed nuts, puddles (turtles), and chocolate dipped cherries and blueberries now – they make great holiday gifts or a treat for yourself! For a flyer with pictures and prices, or to make a purchase, call Janet Clark at 299-0019, email mclark@machlink.com, or talk to any of the MHS band students. Walk-ins are welcome at the band’s “nut house” at 1700 Park Ave. (southwest corner of the Vision Center PC building). Hours are every Tues. evening from 6-7:30 pm and Sat. morning from 10 am till noon until Dec. 20, so buy now while we have a large selection available! Nuts are also available at O’Donnell Ace Hardware, 1420 Park Ave., during regular store hours.
- Girls’ Basketball: Open gym this week is on Monday (7:00-8:30 p.m.) and Thursday (5:30-7:00p.m,) in the main gym.
- Students are reminded to check their PowerSchool every day to see if they have a Tardy.
If you do, you have 2 days to serve the detention. This means you have the day you received the detention and the next day to serve or you will have ISS the day after that.

- Students – You will no longer receive a note to report to your Enrichment for next week. You will be receiving an email from your grade level counselor telling you which enrichment to attend. You will get this email if you are new to enrichment or if your enrichment class has changed. Students who remain in enrichment will not be notified. If you have any questions of where you should report please log into PowerSchool and check your schedule on Monday mornings.
- Blood Drive – Key Club will hold a Blood Drive on November 10th. We will send more information when it becomes available.
- Senior Pictures and a Senior Saying is due November 14th. This information has been sent to students and parents.
- Class of 2015 – If you are a student athlete who plans or has the potential to participate in athletics in college at the Division 1, Division 2, or NAIA level, please make an appointment to meet with Mr. Welsch in the next few weeks to make sure that you meet the NCAA Clearinghouse requirements. It is important to note that some of these requirements differ from MHS graduation requirements and must be met in order to participate in athletics at the Division 1, Division 2 and NAIA levels.

Horatio Alger Association Scholarship: Application is available at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships. Deadline is October 25, 2014
- US Citizen
- 2.0 GPA minimum
- Be involved in school and community
- Demonstrate Financial Need
- Plan on attending college in the Fall of 2015
- Awards range from $7000-$22,000
Other Iowa, ISU, and UNI scholarships are available on the websites of each individual institution.
University of Iowa Presidential Scholarship is now available at http://admissions.uiowa.edu/finances/scholarships-first-year-students. Deadline is December 12, 2014.
- 30 ACT (or a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1330
- 3.80 GPA on a 4.00 scale
- Other criteria are on the application
Voice of Democracy: The Veterans of Foreign Wars offers the Voice of Democracy contest to graduation seniors annually (up to $30,000). For rules and application procedures visit www.vfw.org/VOD. Deadline is November 1, 2014.
Junior Scholarships
Hills Bank Leadership Grant. Visit www.iowa4hfoundation.org/scholarships to find criteria and to apply. Deadline is February 1, 2015.
