Go Muskies!

  • October 13 – Volleyball vs. Davenport North has been postponed. The meet has been rescheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15 and will be held at Muscatine High School with a 4:30 P.M. start.
  • Girls Basketball – There will be no open gym this Thursday due to rescheduled volleyball at MHS.
  • Mr. Armstrong’s freshmen classes will meet in room 228 Tuesday, October 13.
  • Anime Club will not meet today.
  • MHS Band Concert Spook-tacular: Tuesday, Oct. 13., 7:30-9:30PM in the MHS Auditorium. Admission is $5/adult, $3/student. Passes will be accepted.
  • Boys Swim Team – Boys interested in swim team this winter should see Coach Anderson at the pool this week for schedule and information.
  • New Scholarship Opportunity — see below for more info.
  • GSA will meet Wednesday, October 14 in Room 229 after school. Please read the links that will be sent to you. Bring a friend and see you there!
  • Parent/Teacher Walk-in Conferences

  • The MHS Student Services Office will be giving a thirty-minute presentation in the MHS Commons during Parent Teacher Conferences.  “How To Earn College Credit While Attending Muscatine High School” will be presented.

    • Wednesday, October 21st @ 5:30 pm
  • MCC is having a nursing informational meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 14 from 4-6pm in the MCC Student Center.
  • Seniors:  Jostens will have a graduation presentation to the Class of 2016 on October 20th at 10 AM in the Auditorium.  Orders will be due the following Tuesday, Oct. 27, during lunch hour outside of the Student Services office.
  • Model UN: Those attending the Des Moines conference need to attend an informational meeting at 7:45 am on Wednesday, October 14 in Ms. Hansen’s room. We will distribute the itinerary for the trip and go over the schedule.
  • Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA): Join us for the Fields of Faith event on Wednesday, October 14th. It will be held at the North End Park (Rodeo) in Wapello from 6:30-9:00pm. There will be live music, free t-shirt, food, and fellowship. Bring a friend! Contact Ms. Hansen if you need a ride or would like more information.
  • ACT Aspire Testing will take place on October 27th for 9th Grade students and October 28th for 10th-grade students.  Testing will be all day and will take place at MUSCO Lighting. There will be some students who will remain at MHS to test on both days.  Students will be notified by their counselor in the next 2 weeks if they are to remain at MHS for testing.
    Students will be given the option to purchase a sack lunch from the school or to bring their own lunch on their testing day.   If you have any questions please call Mr. Nienhaus at Muscatine High School.
  • On Saturday, November 7, Iowa State University (ISU) Office of Admissions and Lambda Theta Phi Fraternity are hosting a Family Visit Day for Latino high school youth and their families. Through the visit day, they hope to acquaint youth and their parents to ISU, and to help answer questions about college (e.g., campus life, application process, financial aid and scholarships, college admissions tests e.g., ACT, SAT).  The information shared during the visit day may be most beneficial to youth who are in 11th and 12th grades and their families. All family members are welcome to participate in the visit day.  Families will have opportunities to tour a residence hall, eat in a campus dining hall, meet ISU admissions staff, and ISU students. Register for Latino Family Visit Day @

  • Are you interested in making a friend from France?  You don’t have to speak French … just agree to host a student for three weeks in February.  If this sounds like something you want to do, contact Mrs. Paulsen in room 201 or email her at for more information.
  • Model UN: Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 14th at 7:45am in Ms. Hansen’s room (11-024). We will review the itinerary for the Des Moines conference on October 20-21.

** Silver Cord Opportunities **

  • Mulberry Elementary Carnival – High school students interested in earning Silver Cord hours for helping at the Mulberry Carnival this Friday, Oct. 16, may do so by contacting Mrs. Goodman, the principal.  If interested, please email Mrs. Goodman at  Hours to work are 5:30 to 8:00. Please indicate what time you would be available.   Mrs. Goodman will return your email and provide you with details.  Only those students who email by Thursday morning will be able to earn hours.
  • MCCB Halloween Hike – It is almost that time again! It is time for our annual Halloween Hike.  This year the topic is all about plants and animals of the floodplain!  For the first time in more than a decade, the hike will return to Saulsbury Bridge Recreation Area!  We are looking for volunteers for this big event on Friday night October 16th and Saturday night October 17th.  The hikes start at 6:30 and leave from the lodge every 10 minutes until 8:00.  If you love the spotlight we can give you a part as one of the crazy characters, or we have jobs for trail guides, trail maintenance, collecting tickets, pumpkin carving (Wednesday Oct. 14th 8am-4pm at Discovery Park), and other behind-the-scenes duties.  We’d love to have you help on one or both nights!  Please email Michelle Berns at or by phone at 563-264-5922 if interested.
  • Washington School is in need of volunteers to help with their Family Gathering. Volunteers will be helping students read and then choose a book they can take home.

The Quad City Engineering and Science Council is accepting applications for its 2016 college scholarship awards from area high school seniors. Applications are due by January 22, 2016. The winners are selected based on a committee review of their application. This will be our 23rd year of encouraging students pursuing an engineering or science college degree.  Last year we awarded twelve scholarships with a total value of $20,500.

The Quad City and Engineering Science Council Scholarship Program was established and is administered by the Council.  This program provides multiple one-time grants/scholarships between $1000 and $3000 each for high school seniors pursuing a STEM degree at a 4-year university. These are awarded on an objective basis without regard to race, sex, or religion.  Criteria include academics, civic/community service, extracurricular involvement, career goals, and an essay on why you want a STEM degree

This year we are pleased to also offer engineering scholarships from Iowa State University, University of Iowa, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Wisconsin, Platteville, Western Illinois University Quad Cities Campus, and St. Ambrose University.

The Quad City Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) is an umbrella organization representing 36 technical societies totaling about 5,000 members here in the Quad Cities. The QCESC proudly sponsors annual events such as the National Engineers Banquet and the Engineering and Scientist of The Year Awards. We also provide judges for the local technical activities including Invent Iowa and FIRST LEGO League among other Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)-related activities.

Muscatine Chapter of the Iowa Engineering Society: Must plan to pursue a career in engineering. Must attend either University of Iowa or Iowa State University in the Fall of 2016. Must have a 3.0 GPA for 10th and 11th grades. Must have an ACT composite score of at least 24.   Two scholarships available; each worth $1000. The application is available in MHS Student Services. Application deadline: January 15, 2016

Horatio Alger Scholarship: Must demonstrate financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income is required). Must be involved in co-curricular activities and community service activities. Must display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity. Must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Must be a US Citizen.  Scholarships range from $7,000-$22,000.  The application is available at   Application deadline: October 25, 2015.

Hagan Scholarship:  Must have 3.5 GPA or Higher.  Must have 23 on the ACT or higher. Other eligibility requirements are on the website.
The scholarship award ranges from $1,000-$40,000. The average disbursement is $24,000.  This scholarship is only available in 10 states, including Iowa.  The application and more information is available at   Application deadline: November 15, 2015.

Jerry Woods/Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) Scholarship: Must be enrolling in the first year at an Iowa community college or tech school building trades program including concrete technology and practice. Must be a resident of Iowa.  Scholarship is $2,500 per year for 2 years.

Application deadline: November 30, 2015.

Young Entrepreneur Foundation Awards: Must have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and initiative. Must be a graduating senior that owns/operates his/her own small business. Must plan to attend a 2 year, 4 year or vocational school.  Scholarships/awards range from $2000-$15,000
The application is available at   Application deadline: December 18, 2016.

Iowa Newspaper Foundation: Must be preparing for a newspaper career.   A total of 9 scholarships, all available with ONE application.  Total awards will be approximately $6,700. The application is available at   Application deadline: February 12, 2016.

Pearl Hull Falk Scholarship: Must be of Protestant Faith, resident of Iowa, and will attend the University of Iowa full time in the Fall of 2016.  The scholarship award is $800.  The application is only available in MHS Student Services.  Application deadline: May 2, 2016.

Midwest Technical Institute Scholarship Program: Must plan to attend MTI in Fall of 2016.
The application is available in MHS Student Services or with an admissions representative at MTI   Application deadline: July 1, 2016.
