  • The MHS Cheer Program will be holding cheerleading tryouts for winter basketball & wrestling cheer. Practices will be 10/24 from 5-7 pm in the girls’ side upper gym and 10/27 from 5-7 pm in the commons. Tryouts will be October 29th from 9 am to 12 pm in the MHS Gym. Tryout packets will be available at the attendance office on October 10th. Any girls and boys, with a cheer, dance, and/or tumbling background, in any grade, are encouraged to tryout!   • Spring/Summer Yearbook Inserts are available at the Attendance Center for those that purchased an MHS Yearbook last year.

    This week’s tip is about getting help with the FAFSA form through FAFSA Ready Iowa or an ICAN center and is brought to you by the Greater Des Moines Partnership.
  • Introducing FAFSA Ready Iowa – You know how important the FAFSA form is for your seniors. So do we. And we know that not everyone can come to an ICAN office for help. So today we introduce FAFSA Ready Iowa.  FAFSA Ready Iowa Info
  • Fall Wrestling Club will have Open Mat workouts in wrestling room on Sundays from 5-6 pm and Tuesdays from 7-8pm.
  • The University of Iowa is holding a Learn to Row Clinic on October 16th from 12-3pm at the
    P. Sue Beckwith Boathouse on the UIowa campus. Here is the link for further details –
  • Lost and Found – Please stop at the Attendance Office if you have lost clothing, shoes, backpack, phone, etc. Many items have been turned in!
  • Aquarium Club – Those who’ve expressed an interest in Aquarium Club are invited to join Mr. Johnson’s Google Classroom, so we may begin planning feeding schedules, finishing the office saltwater aquarium, and deciding our spring trip venue. The classroom code is: jbwca4
  • The 6th Annual Muskie Marching Invitational will be held this Saturday, Oct. 8, from 5:30-10 pm at the High School. The Mighty Muskie Marching Band starts off the event with the National Anthem and wrap up the event by performing their fall show “Swan Lake” by Tchaikovsky. Seventeen area high school marching bands will then vie for awards. The public is invited to attend. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and students K-12; under 5 free.
  • Young American Creative Patriotic Art Awards – Students must be in grades 9-12. Deadline to submit entries to local VFW Auxiliary is March 31, 2017. ** Silver Cord Opportunities **

  • Silver Cord Opportunity for Sunday, October 9th. We have available time slots starting from 9 am to 6 pm. Each hour the fields need to be raked and chalked prior to the next Game.     Volunteers Needed – Pearl Valley of Muscatine is looking for volunteers for their Fall Festival on October 14th from 5-7 PM. We need volunteers to man our games (football toss, ring toss, gone fishing, Plinko), face painting, and monitor the Bouncy House. If interested, please contact Jina Hernandez, Nissa Fox, or Amy Graham at 563-264-2023 or email  The event will take place at 2002 Cedar St. in Muscatine.

  • Grant Elementary – Mrs. Lawrence is looking for students to assist students with reading in her 1st-grade class from 12:00-1:00 every day. If interested, please contact Mrs. Lawrence at
  • Grant Elementary is looking for volunteers for the Grant School Family Reading/Tailgating Night on Friday, October 14 from 4:30-7:00 pm in the Grant School Parking Lot.  Help is needed with Face Painting for the Muskie football game or to help serving food or cleaning up. If interested, please contact Gina Schliesman at
  • Jefferson Elementary is looking for volunteers for their Clifford the Big Red Dog Family Reading Night on Thursday, October 13th from 3-5pm. Students would run the book walk and/or craft station. Please contact Stephanie Zillig at if interested.
  • Jefferson Elementary is looking for volunteers for their Build It Family Night with the Bettendorf Family Museum on Wednesday, October 19th from 5-7pm. Students would volunteer at a station to build with legos, kinex, or another material. Please contact Stephanie Zillig at if interested.

The Elks Most Valuable Student (MVS) Scholarship. Deadline: November 30, 2016. Applications available online at   Must apply online, no paper applications.

There are 500 scholarships available to high school seniors nationally:
500 Four-year awards
Two $50,000 scholarships ($12,500 per year)
Two $40,000 scholarships ($10,000 per year)
Two $30,000 scholarships ($7,500 per year)
Fourteen $20,000 scholarships ($5,000 per year)
480 – $4,000 scholarships ($1,000 per year)
Eligibility to apply: US citizen, High school senior
