  • Wednesday’s Edition of Interesting Facts for Deaf Awareness Week
    Did you know that:
    1) Sitting in front of the speakers at a rock concert can will begin to damage hearing in only 7 1/2 minutes. This damage cannot be reversed.
    2) 37% of children with only minimal hearing loss fail at least one grade.
    3) Listening through earphones for just one hour will increase the bacteria in your ear up to 700 times.
    4) The sound of the roaring ocean you hear when putting a seashell next to your ear is the sound of your blood surging through the veins in your ear.
    5) Contrary to popular belief, a cochlear implant does not result in “restored” hearing for the recipient but does allow him or her to perceive sounds. A person with a cochlear implant hears an electronic version of sound similar to a computerized voice.
Below are links to two videos. The first one shows how a cochlear implant works. The second shows what it is like to hear through a cochlear implant. The sound does not actually start on this one until 40 sec. into the video. However, it is closed captioned so you know what is going on.
