    Flickinger Learning Center Volunteers Needed
    – Please contact Kimberly Bowman at
Kimberly@flickingerlc.com or 563-288-9000.  Our program is an academic after-school program for at-risk youth. Our goal is to get the students on target academically. Our main focus is literacy and math, but we also incorporate other STEM activities, social skills, arts and crafts, and movement. We have a pretty good track record for increasing reading fluency, and that has led to our fairly rapid expansion. This year we will have 240 students at 6 sites! We have our main site at 413 Mulberry that takes children in grades K-5 from any school in town, and then we have five school sites located at Grant, Madison, McKinley, Jefferson, and Franklin. The school sites take children K-3 that have been identified by their teachers/principals as being at risk.
  • One of the reasons we have been so successful is because we have fantastic dedicated volunteers that read either 1 on 1 or in small groups, help with STEM projects, supervise and facilitate game play, and model what good citizenship looks like. In the past, we have had some absolutely outstanding volunteers that have come from MHS! Not only are they energized and excited, but the elementary kids are more likely to think that the high school kids are cool, and they want to follow their lead. We do offer silver cord hours, and I always tell our volunteers that I would be more than willing to write a recommendation for a job or college as well if they show up and do a good job.
  • Peer Tutoring is a program for students that has students help students in math and science. We are currently in need of tutors for the program. To be a tutor you must have taken/be taking the subject that you want to help in and must have an A in the class. If you are interested please email either Evan Colony at colonyee@mcsdonline.org or Ms. Hirschfeld at betsy.hirschfeld@mcsdonline.org.  If you decide to tutor you will receive Silver Cord hours.
