Go Muskies!

  • A representative from MCC will be here today in the Student Service office from 8:30am to 1:00pm.
  • May 14 – Boys 2A District Tennis @ Iowa City has been postponed. It has been rescheduled for Friday, May 15 @ Hawkeye Tennis and Rec Center in Iowa City (9:00 a.m. start).
  • Yearbooks will be distributed to those students that have pre-ordered a yearbook starting May 15 at 8:30AM in the auditorium.  Seniors will be called down first followed by juniors, then sophomores, then freshmen. (A spreadsheet has been emailed to all students to know if they pre-ordered or not.) If you did not order a yearbook and would like to purchase one of the extra copies we ordered, those will be available on a first come, first serve basis at the Attendance Office starting Monday, May 18th for $56.
  • Are you interested in an inter-cultural experience, but can’t travel abroad?  Language and Friendship is looking for host families THIS SUMMER for students from France and Spain.  They will be here for a month, and just want to experience American life and practice their English.  If you are interested, see Mrs. Paulsen in Room 201 as soon as possible.
  • The 2015 FFA Plant Sale is being held throughout the month of May. We have had a very successful sale this year, but there are still more plants for sale! Feel free to stop in on Thursday or Friday through the end of the month and support the FFA between  7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.!
  • We invite you to attend the 1st Annual Muskie Baseball Hit-A-Thon on May 14th at Tom Bruner Field. Your Muskie Baseball players will be performing in a HR derby similar to what you see on TV to help raise funds for the baseball program. There will be music and a live broadcast  by Vintage Sound 93.1 and our own radio personality Tony Tone. There will be catering from Hy-Vee grill, as well as entertainment for all of our youth which include speed pitch and a bounce house. We also want to welcome all youth in the dugout to spend time with our players. Community members will also have the opportunity to win the following items through a raffle: an autographed picture of Chicago Cubs Anthony Rizzo, a burrito for a week for a year from Mami’s, Muskie Baseball apparel, and more….Hope to see you all on May 14th!  View ‘Hit-A-Thon” link for details: Hit – A – Thon
  • There will be a Fall Boys Golf Sign-up Meeting on Monday, May 18 from 7:30-8:15AM in the Commons.  If you are unable to attend or have any questions, please contact Coach Randleman at tom.randleman@mcsdonline.org or at 563-263-9960.
  • May 18 – JV Boys Soccer vs. Pleasant Valley will be played at the Pleasant Valley H.S. stadium with a 6:30 P.M. start time (please note the start time change). 
  • The Muskie Library will again have extended hours for finals week! During finals week (Tuesday 05/26 – Thursday 05/28) the library will be open from 7:30am – 7:00pm. Students are encouraged to come use the extra study time to prepare for semester tests or final projects – snacks (brain food) will be served from 5:00-7:00pm. Good Luck, Muskie Nation!
  • New Volunteer / Silver Cord Opportunities added — see below for more information.
  • Musser Public Library invites children, teens, adults, and families to visit the library between Sat. May 16th & Fri. May 22rd, 2015 and start the summer off right with a clear library card. During Fine Free Week, all fines will be forgiven on returned items, and any lost or missing library cards will be replaced for free, in preparation for this year’s Summer Reading Program, “Every Hero Has a Story“, which begins in June, 2015.

  • MHS Girls Tennis will have our annual awards banquet on Tuesday, May 19th in the cafeteria at MHS, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.  Sophomores bring main dishes, juniors bring side dishes, seniors bring desserts, and freshmen bring drinks (water bottles, chocolate milk & cups, juice & cups, etc).  All bring your own place settings. 
  • Freshman-Juniors: All library books and materials are due by Friday, May 22nd. If you need to keep a book longer for a class assignment, please contact Mrs. Keltner.

    Summer Lifeguards – If interested in being a lifeguard, Geneva Country Club is hiring.  Please stop in and pick up an application.

    Attention students!  If you are interested in earning some money this summer, please stop by the counselor’s office to pick up information about detasseling.
  • Seniors & Senior Parents: Jostens will be at school delivering cap and gowns on Friday, May 22nd from 10:30-2:00-pm in the library.  If your student still has a balance due, please remember that all items must be paid in full in order to pick up the cap and gown.  We only accept cash or money orders on Friday, but if you would like to pay by credit or debit card, they can call 1-800-JOSTENS to pay or to check if you have a balance due.  We are open from 8am-7pm and we have agents that are bilingual.

** Volunteer / Silver Cord Hours **

Grant Elementary School will be holding their annual Field Day on Friday, May 22. We are looking for several volunteers between the hours of 11:15-3:15 to help with outdoor games. You will be awarded Silver Cord hours. If you are able to help us out, please contact Emily Shield at emily.shield@mcsdonline.org .

CROSSROADS is in need of volunteers to help with the games at the 2nd annual CROSSROADS Carnival.  It will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2015 from 11am-4pm. You can stay for the whole day, or work in half day shifts.  Shifts are 10:45-1:30 and 1:15-4.  Lunch will be provided for volunteers that stay for the whole day.  Please contact Shannon Walsh @ www.crossroadsmuscatine.org or at 563.263.3545 x. 101 if interested.  Please view the attached flyer for more information.

Carnival 2015

United Way is working on keeping the summer free lunch program, but we need your help.  We are needing volunteers to help us deliver and serve meals during the summer.  You can help 2 times or 10 times this summer.  We just want your help. Please view the attached flyer for more information.

2nd Annual Pack the Bus Event.   We are looking for groups to have a booth and have kid activities or if you are interested in just helping us, let me know. Please view ‘Pack the Bus Sign Up” link and attached flyer for more information.

Help is needed at Benefit for Piper Pigsley:  A benefit for Piper Pigsley, a 2 year old girl that has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia will be held on be May 17, 2015 between 12:30-3:30 at Muscatine Community Y.   If you like children and activites with children we would love to have a few students help us during this event.  We will have food and drinks, Gunny the Clown will be there doing balloon twist and face painting; we have a couple craft ideas for kids along with Pin the Nose on Olaf. ** Scholarship Information **

  • Quad Cities Illini Club Scholarship – $500 scholarship is available to a student from the Quad City area who begins at the University of Illinois in Fall of 2015. The 2015 scholarship is open to any graduating senior or community college student who will be attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the Fall of 2015.  All applicants will be evaluated on the basis of need, community service, academic success, an message and other criteria. Due date is May 15, 2015.   Quad Cities Illini Club Scholarship  University of Illinois Alumni Application
  • Children’s Cancer Connection: Scholarship values range from $500-$5,000. Applicant must be directly affected by childhood cancer and must plan to attend a 2 or 4 year university.  Application and other information are available in MHS Student Services.  Due date is May 29, 2015.
  •  Nursing Schools Almanac Scholarship:  Nursing Schools Almanac is proud to announce our inaugural Aspiring Nurse Scholarship. We will award a $1,000 scholarship to an aspiring nurse who best demonstrates:

    Competition eligibility: This scholarship competition is open to all US high school seniors who plan to pursue college education in nursing, including LPN / LVN, ADN, and BSN programs.
    Applicants must be in good academic standing and on track to graduate from high school at the conclusion of the 2014-15 academic year. Only one application entry is accepted per student.

    Important dates:
    June 30, 2015: Submission deadline for scholarship applications is 11:59pm PT.
    July 2015: Scholarship committee will meet to review all applications received.
    August 2015: Winner will be notified and $1,000 scholarship will be awarded.

  • The Bright Scholars Award — please see attached document for more information. The Bright Scholars of Iowa
  • Iowa Section PGA–Charlie Burkart Scholarship: $4,000 scholarship ($1,000 per year for 4 years). Application is available in MHS Student Services.  Due Date is 6/12/2015.
