Today is a BLUE Day!

 

Upcoming events and dates to remember:

Oct. 24 – 27 – Conference Week

Oct. 27 – 2 hour early dismissal

Oct. 28 – NO SCHOOL

 

Instructional Time is very important to us at West. We do’nt interrupt class time to deliver messages. Our last class of the day begins at 2:42 and ends at 3:21. Beginning October 1st, messages must be received before 2:30 to assure they will be announced at2:42.

 

STUDENTS: Mr. Keith, Ms. Matteson and Ms. Schneider will be holding “Homework Club every Monday through Thursday after school. This club is available to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders…

WHAT: Homework Club

WHERE: WMS Library

WHEN: Mon-Thurs 3:30pm – 4:45pm

WHY: To help students complete assignments, to further students’ understanding of standard skills, and to encourage the importance of positive relationships at school.

The club is open to all middle school students. There are a few other teachers as well as several students from the high school who have volunteered to help with this program. Students may come only when they need a little extra help or they can come everyday.

Students will also need a signed permission slip to stay for Homework Club.

Parents will need to arrange for transportation home on the days their student stays for the club.

 

The Main office has registration forms for the 2016-2017 Muskie Wrestling Club. You may also register at the MHS Commons area Tuesday, October 4th 5:00pm – 7:00pm or Thursday, October 6th 5:00pm-7:00pm

 

The sixth grade teachers and students would appreciate if everyone could turn in any Box Tops they have been collecting at home: 6th graders can bring their Box Tops to Mrs. Soy or Mrs. Stutzel, and 7th and 8th graders can bring their Box Tops to the main office. Every Box Top counts!

 

Change from previous announcement: Parent/Student (8th grade) informational meeting for the Close Up Washington D.C. trip (April 9-13, 2017) will be Tuesday, October 4 @ 6 PM in the West Middle School Library.  For questions email matt.rivera@mcsdonline.org.  Cost is approximately $1800.

 

Stop by the main office to pick up information on the Muscatine Parks and Recreation’s Girls Basketball Clinic 2016. Deadline to register is October 24th at 5:00pm.

 

Thursday Edition of Interesting Facts for Deaf Awareness Week
Did you know that:

1) After Beethoven became totally deaf at around 30 years of age, he composed hundreds of musical pieces including one of his most famous—“Ode to Joy”.
2) Miss America 1995 Heather Whitestone McCallum was deaf. As her talent she did a ballet dance by feeling musical vibrations and counting the measures of the music in her head. She decided to get a cochlear implant in 2002, when she couldn’t hear her injured son cry for help.
3) Sue Thomas is an American woman who became the first deaf person to work as an undercover investigator doing lip-reading of suspects for the FBI. She started a foundation called “Kennels of Levi EPEC” that trains hearing ear and service dogs for people with disabilities.
4) Thomas Edison lost most of his hearing from scarlet fever as a child. He held over 1,000 patents for his inventions.
5) William Ellsworth “Dummy” Hoy (1862-1961) was the first deaf player to have a long career in the major leagues. Hoy played a pioneering role in the creation of the hand signals still used today in baseball games throughout the world.
