Excellence in Education

Director info: Jan Collinson, Director of Special Programs

What is it?

Each year MCSD writes a grant to the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust to fund the Excellence in Education program. This program provides scholarships and recognition for MCSD students and staff.  We have received the grant for over 25 years

Scholarships

In 2010, twenty seniors received a $2,750 scholarship to be applied at the post-secondary institution of their choice. Seniors can be nominated by anyone within the community, including school employees, peers, family members and employers. A wide variety of criteria is taken into consideration, but overcoming adversity is the most important. Many of our students face great adversities, but Excellence in Education scholarships are awarded to those who have continued to achieve their goals in spite of hardships.

Ten eighth grade students were selected, using the same criteria, to receive $1000 scholarships upon graduation from high school. This is not only motivating to students, but unique to any scholarship program.

Each student selects a Muscatine School District employee, past or present, who has made an impact on their education. That person will be recognized at the program with the student.

Four certified employees (teachers, administrators, nurses, counselors, etc.) will be selected to receive $1000 award. One support staff (para-professional, bus driver, food service, etc.) will receive a $500 award. All recipients will be selected from community-based nominations. The major criteria are their positive impact on the education of students in Muscatine schools. Awards can be applied toward coursework or supplies to improve their classroom or building.

Dates

The nomination process for both students and staff begins in late winter.

Recipients are announced in April. The Excellence in Education program has historically been held at the Clarion on a Sunday in mid-May. Over the years, Excellence in Education has become a community event where everyone celebrates the accomplishments of our students, staff and our school district. The program is followed by a reception, truly making it a celebration.
