When she was eight, her parents sold her into slavery. Shyima then moved two hours away to Egypt’s capitol city of Cairo to live with a wealthy family and serve them eighteen hours a day, seven days a week. When she was ten, her captors moved to Orange County, California, and smuggled Shyima with them. Two years later, an anonymous call from a neighbor brought about the end of Shyima’s servitude—but her journey to true freedom was far from over. Checkout (or hold) a copy with the library staff!

  • Muscatine Head Start Opportunity – Head Start works with children 0-5 and their families in a classroom setting. We are a comprehensive program that offers these services to low-income families in a high-quality early childhood center. We are currently looking for classroom substitutes and volunteers. This would be a great opportunity for high school students who are looking for experience in an Early Childhood classroom. Volunteers would be matched with a center at a convenient location to their home/school. This is not a paid position but would offer students experience with children. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. This would be day time hours and may be a great match for a class or summer time. Background checks may be required.  Muscatine Head Start Volunteer Information
