Go Muskies!

  • The annual MHS Art Extravaganza, hosted by the Art Club, is TODAY, Friday, April 8th in the new wing gallery space from 8 AM until 7:30 PM.  We are currently accepting art submissions! You do not have to be in an art class or art club to submit art!  Come support your friends and fellow classmates!  Food, crafts, and art are all on sale!
  • JUNIORS:  – need help getting ready for the ACT math test?  Come to Room AA38 on Monday, April 11th and Wednesday, April 13th from 3:35-4:15.  We will be going over the top ten things from Geometry that you need to know for the ACT.
  • SENIOR GIRLS & PARENTS: Muscatine Community YMCA honors MHS Senior Girls Athletes
    The Muscatine Community YMCA will hold it’s 40th annual Senior Female Athletic Recognition Banquet Wednesday, April 27th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Wesley Methodist Church.  The banquet & program will be held to honor the senior girls athletes of all MHS sports, and thank them and their coaches for their contribution to the MHS Athletic Program, the Muscatine community and the field of sports for women.  The Outstanding Senior Female Athlete of the Year award, chosen by the athletes, will be presented.   Keynote speaker for the event will be Frannie Malone, Associate Head Coach for Women’s and Men’s Swimming and Diving for the University of Iowa.   Athletes, parents and coaches should have received an invitation in the mail.  Reservations need to be turned in by Fri., April 22.  For more information, contact Amy or Mel at the Y at 263-9996.
  • FCA: We will meet on Monday, April 11th at noon in Ms. Hansen’s room. There will be pizza. See you there!
  • Parents and Students:  If your student accessed their 2016-17 Class Schedule, it was not accurate or finalized.  Schedules are still being built. We will notify you when schedules are completed and at that time we will make changes for following reasons only: Schedule conflicts, Errors, Adding a course to replace a study hall.
    Requesting a different elective course, change of a teacher, or change in class period will not be granted.  Unique circumstances will need to be approved by MHS administration.  
  • Muscatine FFA Plant Sale at the MHS Greenhouse: April 28-29, May 5-6, May 7th, May 12-13, May 19-20,  Thursdays and Fridays 7:30 AM – 6 PM, Saturday May 7th 8 AM – 10 AM.  See attachment for more information.   2016 FFA Plant Sale
  • Masquerade Ball and Pasta Dinner to celebrate the 25th anniversary of River City Rhythm on  Saturday, April 9th, 2016 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Rendezvous – 3127 Lucas St., Muscatine, IA.
    Menu consists of Pasta with red sauce or alfredo, green beans, salad, bread and dessert.

    Enjoy an evening of dining, entertainment and dancing. RCR and Encore will perform as well as other solo acts.  Doors open at 5:30 PM, serving at 6:00 PM.  Masks are not required for the evening but highly encouraged. (There might even be a prize for the best mask.  The awards ceremony will be at 9:00 PM.)

  • MHS CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS FOR THE 2016 FALL SEASON are scheduled for Friday, April 29th from 4:30 – 8:30 pm in the Commons and Cafeteria. Doors will open at 3:30 pm that day to practice and warm up. Tryout material will be posted on Sunday, April 17th. All students in grades 8th-11th are encouraged to tryout!

    There will be tryout prep clinics from 5:30 – 7 pm in the commons on April 11th, 12th, 18th, 19th, and 21st. Prep clinics are for anyone who would like to start learning the basic skills of cheerleading and go over tryout material. The clinic on April 21st will be followed by an informational meeting at 7:00 pm in the commons.  Material review practices will be held from 5:30 – 7 pm in the commons or outside on April 25th, 26th, and 28th.

    Tryout information packets and prep clinic forms will be available starting Monday, April 11th at the MHS Attendance Office and at Central and West Middle Schools. If you have any questions please email Head Coach, Ashley Sink, at muskiecheercoach@gmail.com
  • Girls’ Basketball: We will have a meeting on Friday morning at 7:30am in the Commons to talk about spring open gyms. Anyone who plans to play next year should attend. See you there!
  • Boys’ and Girls’ Track and Field:  To all those who ordered cookie dough from boy’s or girls’s track and field. The truck broke down with the cookie dough. It is now being delivered on Friday April 9th after school. Please see Coach Foxen or Coach Faulk with any questions.
  • Prom 2016 – April 30th: To attend prom, students need to be at least a 3rd year student (Junior or Senior) in good standing with at least 14 credits. Also, out of town guests need to be approved prior to prom. Prom Guest Letters are available in the Asst. Principal’s office.  This permission slip is for guests that do not attend MHS, are in good standing and are under the age of 21.  Guest forms need to be approved by MHS administration by Tuesday, April 26th.
  • BUS-eum: Musser Library, along with the Museum of History and Industry, has arranged for an unusual and interesting history exhibit to be available locally. Called a “BUS-eum,” it is a bus that doubles as a museum exhibit, all about Iowa and Iowa history. The bus will be parked outside Musser Library between 10 am and 5 pm on Saturday, April 9th. The traveling historians will also deliver two lectures inside the library, one at 10:30 am and the other at 1:30 pm.  Please see the attached flyer for more information.  Bus-eum Information
  • Summer Work Opportunity: Lifeguards needed  at the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois Summer Camp. This position is located at Camp Liberty, near New Liberty, Iowa, and will run early June-mid August.   • We are in need of more clients to hire our soccer athletes!  Hire Muscatine High School Soccer Players to do your yardwork, painting, Spring cleaning, etc. on April 24h from 1:30 – 4:30 PM!  Cost is $50 for 2 workers — boys or girls.  Please contact Kathy Berns to sign up @ 563-260-4380.

  • The MHS Drama Department is proud to present “Catch Me If You Can – The Musical” on Thursday, April 21st and Friday, April 22nd at 7pm, and again on Saturday, April 23rd at 2:00 and 7:30 pm.  Performances are held in the MHS Auditorium.  Based on the hit film and the incredible true story, Catch Me If You Can, is the high-flying musical comedy about chasing your dreams and not getting caught.  With great music, great characters and a great story, this 1960’s mid-century modern musical is not to be missed!  Tickets are available in advance (reserved seats): Catch Me Ticket Order Form  Tickets are also available at the door on the day of the show.  Adults $8, Senior (60+) and Students (K-12) $6.  Please note – no passes.  Catch Me If You Can Poster  For more information visit: muskiedrama.wordpress.com
  • Volleyball varsity try-outs are tentatively set for the month of June on Sunday the 12th, Sunday the 19th and an optional date of Sunday, June 26th.  The times will be 5 – 7 pm at Muscatine High School.  For those who are planning on trying out please let Coach Martin know ASAP if these dates will be a conflict so that other dates can be considered to be fair to everyone.He would ask that you participate in as many of these times as possible but attending all dates are not mandatory.  Please contact Coach Martin at 563-299-1666 with your replies.
  • Muskie Booster Members Needed!  The Muskie Boosters are currently recruiting new board members for the 2016-2017 Board.  Board members help with special events like Fall kick-off, Cake Auction, etc. also helping with concession volunteers.  The Muskie Boosters support all MHS sports, activities, clubs, etc raising funds and helping keep the activities/sports going.   • 4th Annual MCSD Race for Schools  in on May 7, 2016.  Registration forms are available at the Attendance Office.

  • Muskie Pom Tryouts will be held on Saturday, April 16 High School Gym 10:00 am-1:00pm.  The Tryout Video is  posted on the MUSKIE POM Facebook page. Handbooks will be available at the main school offices (High School, West or Central).  Please pick one up and have it signed by your parents before tryouts. Tuesday, April 12th | 6 PM – 9 PM | MHS Gym Thursday, April 14th | 6 PM – 9 PM | MHS Gym * Please learn the dance from the video before arriving at the practice.
  • CAPE – Large plastic bottles needed (Hawaiin Punch, Cranberry Juice, not gallon milk containers). If you have any to donate, please drop them off at MHS – Attn: Ginger Chatfield.
  • Junior and Senior Girls:  If you are in need of a Prom Dress, stop in the Assistant Principal’s Office and see Mrs. Chatfield.
  • CAPE Adult Volunteers needed to work on May 1, 2016.  CAPE is the post-prom event that takes place at MHS and is FREE to all Juniors and Seniors to attend.   • STARTALK grant from the National Security Agency. The grant supports high school kids to study Chinese this summer at the University of Iowa from July 5-29 to earn college credits. The grant will cover expenses of tuition, textbooks, lunches, and cultural activities.   • ACT practice testing at Musser Library: Anyone with a library card can use Learning Express anywhere they can receive the Internet.  If a student does not have a card, they just need to bring their student ID and proof or address such as a piece of mail addressed to them, a parent with an ID or even a car registration or a pay slip.  If they have an issue with getting a card (maybe overdues or lost books) just have them call and ask to talk to Pam Collins (Library Director).  The link to Learning Express can be accessed via our website’s electronic resource page, musserpubliclibrary.org/research/research-databases.  There are a large number of review and test prep options for both students and faculty through the site including the following:  ACT, PSAT/SAT and a large number of AP practice tests.  Tests for occupational exams such civil service, CDL, EMT, postal workers, and more ASVAB practice tests.  Practice tests and reviews for college placement exams including ASSET/COMPASS and CLEP.  Graduate Schools test preparation including GRE, LSAT, MAT, MCAT,  and more!
  • Attention Seniors – MALES ONLY:  If haven’t already signed up for Selective Service in your government class, you can register online at www.sss.gov.  If you go to this site, click on Register Online.  It is a legal obligation for all male students 18 years or older (can submit information at age 17 years and 3 months) to register with the Selective Service.  By not doing so, men risk their eligibility for future college loans and grants amongst other things.

KWQC Broadcast ScholarshipThey are offering (2)$1000 scholarships. Must live in the KWQC viewing area and plan on enrolling in broadcasting classes. Deadline is May 6, 2016. Pick up an application is in student services.

Toyota of Muscatine Scholarship – Toyota of Muscatine has established a scholarship program through the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine for graduating Muscatine County students. The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually and is renewable for a second year.  To be eligible, a student: Must be a graduating senior, Muscatine County resident, 2.5 cumulative GPA or better, demonstrate unmet financial need, intend to enroll in an automotive program or business field such as business, finance or marketing at an accredited Iowa educational institution. Muscatine County Soil and Water Conservation Districts’ Kirchner Scholarship information – The Muscatine County Soil and Water Conservation District has established this scholarship program through the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine for graduating Muscatine County students. One $1,000 scholarship is available this year.  to be eligible, at student: Must be a graduating senior, be a Muscatine County resident, 2.5 cumulative GPA or gerr, intend to pursue a career in conservation or agriculture, preference will be given first, to those students enrolling at accredited educational institutions in conservation or agricultural programs, and secondly, those students demonstrating unmet financial need.  Applications are available in Student Services.  For more information, visit your high school counselor’s office, call the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine at 563-264-3863 or email smaharry@GivingGreater.org

Alive and Running Scholarship – Alive and Running is a volunteer driven 5K Run/Walk event held in Dunkerton, Iowa to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention. The Alive and Running Fund will award a $1,500 scholarship to a 2016 High School graduating senior or Current College Student to fund educational costs at a college, university, vocational, or trade school. The award is to recognize and support an individual who has made a positive contribution to the state of Iowa. Iowa Section Professional Golfers’ Association, the Iowa PGA Foundation offers an annual scholarship opportunity in memory on one of its members – Charlie Burkart. This scholarship is open to any graduating senior within our section boundaries and any graduating student of an Iowa high school. It is awarded every year to one recipient. The winner will receive $1000 each year of full-time attendance for four years at a college or university of their choice.  PGA Golf Scholarship

 

American Legion/Edward H. Bitzer Scholarships: Applicants must be a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of member in good standing (or deceased member) of one of three posts listed on the application. Must be a senior in high school. Must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Must be a US Citizen.  Application is available in MHS Student Services.  Deadline: April 15, 2016

Director Application – The Director’s Scholarship is for $500.  Applicants can be from a little wider circle known as the Louisa Resources Area (this includes all of Louisa County and surrounding towns/cities) and the applicant can attend any college or university (not restricted to a school in Iowa).More detailed information is included on the application itself.  Participants can choose to apply for both if they qualify, and can receive these grants more than once.  To apply for both, two separate applications need to be submitted. Aspiring Nurse Scholarship:  Nursing Schools Almanac has just launched its second annual Aspiring Nurse Scholarship. Our website will award a $1,000 scholarship to an aspiring nurse who best demonstrates:  A track record of academic excellence, particularly in science and mathematics & A passion for the nursing profession and the overall field of health care. This scholarship is open to all high school seniors who plan to pursue a college education in nursing, including LPN / LVN, ADN, and BSN programs. SFM Foundation: The SFM Foundation provides scholarships to students whose parents were killed or seriously injured in workplace accidents while working for Minnesota, Iowa, or Wisconsin employers.  These scholarships are up to $10,000 per year, for up to five years. Catherine McAuley Scholarship/Mount Mercy University: This scholarship provides free tuition to Iowa students whose family income is $45,000 or less annually. This scholarship is renewable for up to 4 years. The student must be a graduating Iowa senior and enroll at Mount Mercy as a new freshman.  Students must reside on campus for all 4 years and participate in Mount Mercy’s College Success Program during their first year on campus.  Students must complete the FAFSA. To maintain the scholarship, students must successfully complete 24 semester hours per academic year and maintain a 2.0 GPA. *Students are automatically considered for the Catherine McAuley Scholarship upon admittance to Mount Mercy University.

Pearl Hull Falk Scholarship: Must be of Protestant Faith, resident of Iowa, and will attend the University of Iowa full-time in the Fall of 2016.  The scholarship award is $800.  The application is only available in MHS Student Services.  Application deadline: May 2, 2016.

Midwest Technical Institute Scholarship Program: Must plan to attend MTI in Fall of 2016.
The application is available in MHS Student Services or with an admissions representative at MTI www.midwesttech.edu   Application deadline: July 1, 2016.
