Go Muskies!

• Chemistry Olympiad will meet today, October 26, in room 229 during first enrichment. Please bring your first assignment and we will have a quick meeting about electron configuration and the periodic table and will get your second assignment out to you. • The Fall MHS Choir Concert will be held at 7:00pm, Monday, October 26th in the auditorium at Central Middle School. Admission is $3 for students and $4 for adults. Activity passes and MHS Vocal Music Partnership passes are accepted at this event. Once again, please note that this concert is NOT at the high school.
• GSA will meet Wednesday, October 28 in room 229 at 3:45. Bring snacks if you like, we will have a Halloween movie and some fun! Bring a friend!
• All Teen Reading Challenge forms and minutes are due TODAY. Please turn them into the MHS library staff and we will deliver them to Musser Public Library.
• Rotary Youth Exchange: Are you interested in learning a new language or meeting new people? Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a lifetime for the more than 8,000 students who participate each year. By sharing your own culture and embracing a new one, you help foster global understanding—and learn a great deal about yourself and your home country in the process. If you are aged 15-18, you may be able to participate in this exciting opportunity. • 9th and 10th Grade Students with locked laptops will all be able to get those turned back on Monday.  Every student taking the ACT Aspire will need a fully charged laptop for their testing day.   Please have students stop by the assistant principal’s office on Monday to enable any locked laptops.
• Red Ribbon Week – This week (Oct. 26-30) is Red Ribbon Week.  Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)  will be creating a Wall of Respect during the week.  A table will be setup up in front of Student Services during lunch on Monday & Wednesday. Please stop by to help participate! On Tuesday, the table will be outside the Commons area.
  Oct. 27 is wear red day – wear the color red, turn your back to the camera and snap a photo to share with us using #ISTEPRW2K15 or stop by our table at lunch and we will snap a photo for you.  We wear red to show that we are turning our back on tobacco and other drugs.  
• ACT Aspire Testing will take place for 9th Grade on  Oct. 27. Testing for 10th Grade will be on Oct. 28. Please make sure to be well rested so you do your best on the testing!
• Seniors: Graduation orders will be taken Tuesday, Oct. 27, during lunch hour outside of the Student Services office.
• ATTENTION WRESTLERS: A pre-season meeting for all students interested in wrestling will be held Tuesday, October 27th, at 3:30 in the wrestling room.  Coach McLeod
• Boy’s & Girl’s Bowling: We will be having an informational meeting for boys and girls bowling on Wednesday, October 28th at 3:30pm in the Commons. Meeting should last no longer than 20 minutes.

• Did you play an instrument before coming to MHS?  We’d like to invite you to join us again.
  The band department can provide many instruments.  If you’d like to try playing again, we would welcome you back to the program!  
  
  Former Flautists: We are going to start a flute choir at MHS.  If you are interested, come to the band room on Monday!  We will have the first Rehearsal on Monday, October 26, at 7:30 AM.  You do not have to be in band to join the choir at this time!  If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Heid.
• The Blue Grass American Legion Post 711 are trying to promote a Veteran’s day 5K race that is in the area on Nov. 14th. We are hoping to get the information about the race to all the people that might be interested in participating including the young people in the area. That being said, I am sending this out to all the schools in the area, so that we can drum up support for this event. Attached are the race poster and registration form. • “Make College Happen Challenge“: How do your students plan to pay for college?  That is the question students ages 14-18 will answer as a part of Sallie Mae’s “Make College Happen Challenge.”  The contest will reward 10 high school students who creatively  communicate their plan to pay for college in videos, photos, essays, songs or poems.  The challenge will award a first place prize of $10,000; second place $5,000; third place $2,500; and $1,000 to seven semifinalists.  Students may submit their entries October 15 through December 15.  The 10 finalists will be announced in January based on creativity of entry, effective communication of the message and potential of their plan.  The public will then have the opportunity to choose their favorite entry from the 10 finalists by voting online for a week in February.  Top online voting entries, combined with the judges’ scores will determine the contest winners who will be announced in March. • Yearbook Orders:  If you did not purchase a yearbook for the 2015-2016 school year at registration, you can still purchase them through attendance for $56 up until February 5th.  If you do not buy one before then, we cannot guarantee you will get a copy.  We only order a few extra each year.

The Quad City Engineering and Science Council is accepting applications for its 2016 college scholarship awards from area high school seniors. Applications are due by January 22, 2016. The winners are selected based on a committee review of their application. This will be our 23rd year of encouraging students pursuing an engineering or science college degree.  Last year we awarded twelve scholarships with a total value of $20,500.

The Quad City and Engineering Science Council Scholarship Program was established and is administered by the Council.  This program provides multiple one-time grants/scholarships between $1000 and $3000 each for high school seniors pursuing a STEM degree at a 4-year university. These are awarded on an objective basis without regard to race, sex, or religion.  Criteria include academics, civic/community service, extracurricular involvement, career goals, and an essay on why you want a STEM degree

This year we are pleased to also offer engineering scholarships from Iowa State University, University of Iowa, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Wisconsin, Platteville, Western Illinois University Quad Cities Campus, and St. Ambrose University.

The Quad City Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) is an umbrella organization representing 36 technical societies totaling about 5,000 members here in the Quad Cities. The QCESC proudly sponsors annual events such as the National Engineers Banquet and the Engineering and Scientist of The Year Awards. We also provide judges for the local technical activities including Invent Iowa and FIRST LEGO League among other Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)-related activities.

Muscatine Chapter of the Iowa Engineering Society: Must plan to pursue a career in engineering. Must attend either University of Iowa or Iowa State University in the Fall of 2016. Must have a 3.0 GPA for 10th and 11th grades. Must have an ACT composite score of at least 24.   Two scholarships available; each worth $1000. The application is available in MHS Student Services. Application deadline: January 15, 2016

Horatio Alger Scholarship: Must demonstrate financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income is required). Must be involved in co-curricular activities and community service activities. Must display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity. Must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Must be a US Citizen.  Scholarships range from $7,000-$22,000.  The application is available at www.scholars.horatioalger.org   Application deadline: October 25, 2015.

Hagan Scholarship:  Must have 3.5 GPA or Higher.  Must have 23 on the ACT or higher. Other eligibility requirements are on the website.
The scholarship award ranges from $1,000-$40,000. The average disbursement is $24,000.  This scholarship is only available in 10 states, including Iowa.  The application and more information is available at www.hsfmo.org   Application deadline: November 15, 2015.

Jerry Woods/Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) Scholarship: Must be enrolling in the first year at an Iowa community college or tech school building trades program including concrete technology and practice. Must be a resident of Iowa.  Scholarship is $2,500 per year for 2 years.

Young Entrepreneur Foundation Awards: Must have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and initiative. Must be a graduating senior that owns/operates his/her own small business. Must plan to attend a 2 year, 4 year or vocational school.  Scholarships/awards range from $2000-$15,000
The application is available at www.NFIB.com/YEA   Application deadline: December 18, 2016.

Iowa Newspaper Foundation: Must be preparing for a newspaper career.   A total of 9 scholarships, all available with ONE application.  Total awards will be approximately $6,700. The application is available at www.INAnews.com   Application deadline: February 12, 2016.

Pearl Hull Falk Scholarship: Must be of Protestant Faith, resident of Iowa, and will attend the University of Iowa full time in the Fall of 2016.  The scholarship award is $800.  The application is only available in MHS Student Services.  Application deadline: May 2, 2016.

Midwest Technical Institute Scholarship Program: Must plan to attend MTI in Fall of 2016.
The application is available in MHS Student Services or with an admissions representative at MTI www.midwesttech.edu   Application deadline: July 1, 2016.
