Go Muskies!

  • Seniors: Jostens will be returning TODAY, Wednesday, Oct. 28 to take Graduation orders during lunch hour outside of the Student Services office.
  • Blood Drive: Key Club will be hosting a Blood Drive on Monday, November 9th. Email Ms. Hansen if you’d like to sign-up to donate.
  • Girls’ Basketball: There will be a parent meeting on Thursday, November 5th at 7:30pm in the Commons. Please attend if your daughter is planning to play basketball this season.
  • Key Club: Meeting on Friday, October 30th at 7:30am in Ms. Hansen’s room. Bring your Blood Drive sign-up sheets!
  • Model UN: Please check your email for a survey on committee interest for the University of Chicago trip. The conference is February 4th-7th. We’ve been assigned the delegation of Barbados.
  • ATTENTION WRESTLERS: A pre-season meeting for all students interested in wrestling will be held Tuesday, October 27th, at 3:30 in the wrestling room.  Coach McLeod
  • Boy’s & Girl’s Bowling: We will be having an informational meeting for boys and girls bowling on Wednesday, October 28th at 3:30pm in the Commons. Meeting should last no longer than 20 minutes.
  • GSA will meet Wednesday, October 28 in room 229 at 3:45. Bring snacks if you like, we will have a Halloween movie and some fun! Bring a friend!

  • 2-Hour Early Out on Monday, Nov. 2 for Teacher Inservice.
  • The MHS Drama Departments presents  A Murder Is Announced by Agatha Christie.  Plan to join us for this suspenseful whodunnit on November 6 & 7 at 7 PM in the MHS Auditorium.  Tickets are available at the door for $5 each; activity passes will be accepted.  Box office opens at 6:15 PM.  Cautions: the show includes gun shots and a short period of total darkness.   • Creative Writing Club – If you are interested in improving your writing skills and enjoy writing, please join the Creative Writing Club!  We meet on Tuesdays after school until 4:30 PM in Mr. Guerra’s room (room number 21-037, up stairs in the new wing.)  We work on different pieces of writing that involve intriguing and unique scenarios.  Our goal is to improve our skills by opening our imagination and creativity to more possibilities.  Hope to see you there, and bring snacks if you would like!   • The Girls’ Cross Country Banquet will be Monday, November 2 from 6-7:30 pm in the Commons.  Juniors should bring entrees, sophomores sides, freshmen and seniors desserts. Please bring your own table service and drinks. Any questions, contact Coach Armstrong.
  • Boys’ XC Equipment Hand In – We will meet in locker room after school 3:30PM on Tuesday, Oct. 27th or Tuesday, Nov 3rd to hand in XC gear. Please pick the Tuesday that works best for you. See coach Foxen for all questions.
  • MHS Library is looking for LEGO Donations. Please consider donating any LEGOS you have (used is fine) for student use in the library’s Makerspace. The goal is for students to create – so don’t worry if you don’t have a ‘set’ – anything and everything will do!
  • Rotary Youth Exchange: Are you interested in learning a new language or meeting new people? Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a lifetime for the more than 8,000 students who participate each year. By sharing your own culture and embracing a new one, you help foster global understanding—and learn a great deal about yourself and your home country in the process. If you are aged 15-18, you may be able to participate in this exciting opportunity. The Rotary Club of Muscatine will be hosting a meeting for any interested students and parents on Thursday, October 29th at 5:30 pm at Muscatine High School (Commons).  If you have further questions, please contact Cath Hahn,  or Naomi DeWinter,
  • Did you play an instrument before coming to MHS?  We’d like to invite you to join us again.  The band department can provide many instruments.  If you’d like to try playing again, we would welcome you back to the program!  
  • Former Flautists: We are going to start a flute choir at MHS.  If you are interested, come to the band room on Monday!  We will have the first Rehearsal on Monday, October 26, at 7:30 AM.  You do not have to be in band to join the choir at this time!  If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Heid.
  • The Blue Grass American Legion Post 711 are trying to promote a Veteran’s day 5K race that is in the area on Nov. 14th. We are hoping to get the information about the race to all the people that might be interested in participating including the young people in the area. That being said, I am sending this out to all the schools in the area, so that we can drum up support for this event. Attached are the race poster and registration form. ** Silver Cord Opportunities **

  • Community Action is looking for 2-3 volunteers on Wednesday, Oct. 28th starting at 8:30 AM to help reorganize our coat for kids racks. Project is anticipated to last 3-4 hours. This involves taking all the coats off the rack and placing them on tables then going  through the coats and checking labels and hanging them back up from smallest to largest. The volunteers will need to be able to lift, bend, sort, label, and hang the coats. If interested please contact Nichole Sorgenfrey at 563-263-5963.  Thank you for volunteering!

National Scholarship Search Websites:



Seniors interested in the UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME: The Hesburgh-Yuscko Scholars Program is a merit based opportunity for incoming students attending Notre Dame. This is a leadership development program that seeks to attract, encourage, and equip extraordinary students who will have a transformational effect on the Notre Dame community, the Church, and the world.  Benefits of the program include: $25,000 per year toward the cost of attendance at Notre Dame for 4 years (total of $100,000), 4 fully funded summer enrichment experiences, intellectual engagement, etc. Visit for more information and to apply. Deadline is November 15th, 2016.

The GE-Reagan Foundation: This scholarship is looking for students who display leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship.  Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, must show financial need, must be a US Citizen and be seniors intending to enroll in a four year college or university.  This scholarship is $10,000 and is renewable for a total of $40,000. Application is available at Deadline is January 7th, 2016.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC): The organization offers 4 types of scholarships to apply for.  Students may only apply for ONE: Scholars, Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage, African-American or Black Caribbean Heritage, Hispanic/Latino Heritage. Seniors must plan to graduate from high school and enroll full time in a 2 year, 4 year, or technical school. Other requirements can be found at  Application is at Deadline is January 20, 2016.

The Quad City Engineering and Science Council is accepting applications for its 2016 college scholarship awards from area high school seniors. Applications are due by January 22, 2016. The winners are selected based on a committee review of their application. This will be our 23rd year of encouraging students pursuing an engineering or science college degree.  Last year we awarded twelve scholarships with a total value of $20,500.

The Quad City and Engineering Science Council Scholarship Program was established and is administered by the Council.  This program provides multiple one-time grants/scholarships between $1000 and $3000 each for high school seniors pursuing a STEM degree at a 4-year university. These are awarded on an objective basis without regard to race, sex, or religion.  Criteria include academics, civic/community service, extracurricular involvement, career goals, and an essay on why you want a STEM degree

This year we are pleased to also offer engineering scholarships from Iowa State University, University of Iowa, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Wisconsin, Platteville, Western Illinois University Quad Cities Campus, and St. Ambrose University.

The Quad City Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) is an umbrella organization representing 36 technical societies totaling about 5,000 members here in the Quad Cities. The QCESC proudly sponsors annual events such as the National Engineers Banquet and the Engineering and Scientist of The Year Awards. We also provide judges for the local technical activities including Invent Iowa and FIRST LEGO League among other Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)-related activities.

Muscatine Chapter of the Iowa Engineering Society: Must plan to pursue a career in engineering. Must attend either University of Iowa or Iowa State University in the Fall of 2016. Must have a 3.0 GPA for 10th and 11th grades. Must have an ACT composite score of at least 24.   Two scholarships available; each worth $1000. The application is available in MHS Student Services. Application deadline: January 15, 2016

Horatio Alger Scholarship: Must demonstrate financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income is required). Must be involved in co-curricular activities and community service activities. Must display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity. Must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Must be a US Citizen.  Scholarships range from $7,000-$22,000.  The application is available at   Application deadline: October 25, 2015.

Hagan Scholarship:  Must have 3.5 GPA or Higher.  Must have 23 on the ACT or higher. Other eligibility requirements are on the website.
The scholarship award ranges from $1,000-$40,000. The average disbursement is $24,000.  This scholarship is only available in 10 states, including Iowa.  The application and more information is available at   Application deadline: November 15, 2015.

Jerry Woods/Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) Scholarship: Must be enrolling in the first year at an Iowa community college or tech school building trades program including concrete technology and practice. Must be a resident of Iowa.  Scholarship is $2,500 per year for 2 years.

Application deadline: November 30, 2015.

Young Entrepreneur Foundation Awards: Must have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and initiative. Must be a graduating senior that owns/operates his/her own small business. Must plan to attend a 2 year, 4 year or vocational school.  Scholarships/awards range from $2000-$15,000
The application is available at   Application deadline: December 18, 2016.

Iowa Newspaper Foundation: Must be preparing for a newspaper career.   A total of 9 scholarships, all available with ONE application.  Total awards will be approximately $6,700. The application is available at   Application deadline: February 12, 2016.

Pearl Hull Falk Scholarship: Must be of Protestant Faith, resident of Iowa, and will attend the University of Iowa full time in the Fall of 2016.  The scholarship award is $800.  The application is only available in MHS Student Services.  Application deadline: May 2, 2016.

Midwest Technical Institute Scholarship Program: Must plan to attend MTI in Fall of 2016.
The application is available in MHS Student Services or with an admissions representative at MTI   Application deadline: July 1, 2016.
